Cottenham Fun Run 2018 – Saturday 5 May
This year the annual Cottenham 7K Fun Run was blessed with some wonderful weather on the May Day bank holiday weekend. This ensured a great crowd to cheer the runners on and to enjoy the morning market with over 20 stalls offering cakes, gifts, competitions and much more.
The Fun Run, started nearly 30 years ago by Jasper Kay, continues to flourish under Martyn Leeks supported by Rebecca Cole. They organise the event on behalf of the Fen Edge Community Association; we strongly feel that events like this are an integral part of local communities and a wonderful way of bringing people together.
This year’s Fun Run raised £1,052.33 for the Cambridgeshire branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association a group with the sole aim of serving all those in the area who are living with motor neurone disease and their carers, family and friends.Our picture shows race organiser Martyn Leeks presenting the cheque to members of the group.
We are indebted to Malary Ltd for their sponsorship and ever generous support and would also like to thank Cottenham Parish Council for their kind donation of £250.
The first race was the mini Fun Run for primary school children. One lap around the Village College playing field, a distance of one mile. A total of 67 children took part, each awarded a race medal for their superb achievement.
The main 7K race attracted 129 runners, 27 of those school children. The race takes a circular route around the village, part on road and part cross country (the best bit). First home was Finn Johnson in 23 minutes and 50 seconds beating his winning time in 2017 by 50 seconds. The first female was Lisa Marriott, with another great time of 28 minutes and 50 seconds.
The medal ceremony provided just reward for the first three places in all race categories and the podium results are listed below.

Cottenham Fun Run 2017
Once again, the Cottenham 7K Fun Run provided a great morning out for athletes and spectators alike. The proud tradition, started nearly 30 years ago by Jasper Kay, continues to flourish.
This year, Saturday 6th May was cold and overcast. Perfect for runners, a bit challenging for the hardy market stalls, including Carlo’s Ices, attractively circled around the pond.
Fun Run Headquarters was up and ‘running’ at 06:00. Course to check, traffic signage to erect, kilometre markers to position. Then back to Cottenham Village College for the opening of race registration at 9 AM. This year, for the first time, we went digital, with internet pre-registration, a feature that will grow in future years.
First race was the mini Fun Run; one lap around the College playing field, a distance of approximately one mile. A total of 66 children participated, each with a race medal won for their fantastic achievement.
The main 7 Km race commenced at 10:45, with the race starting at the very top end of the College playing fields. A total of 129 runners competed, 47 of those school children.
The race comprises a measured seven kilometres, part on road, part cross country, taking a circular route around the village. First home was Mr Finn Johnson, with a superb time of 24 minutes, 40 seconds. First lady was Mara Johnson, with another great time of 29 minutes, 43 seconds.
The medal ceremony, provided just reward for the first three places to all race categories. Podium results, per category, as listed. All medal winners warmly congratulated by the appreciative crowd.
And that’s it. Pack it all up, put it all away, and eagerly await next year! Once again we are indebted to Malary Ltd waste recycling solutions for their ever generous support and sponsorship as well as the donations of race entrants and market stalls.
This year all monies received, after costs, totalled £850 and have been donated to ‘Twinkle Star Children’s Trust’. The Trust’s primary aims are to support local children’s projects, enrich the lives and educational experiences of children from disadvantaged and challenging backgrounds. Twinkle Star’s wider aims include raising children’s awareness of nature, educating them in the preservation of the environment for their futures. The Trust was established in memory of Isaac Chapman.
