The Fen Edge Festival gets Bags of Help from Tesco

We are extremely pleased to announce that the Fen Edge Festival 2017 has been selected for funding from the Tesco ‘Bags of Help’ Grant scheme, which is tremendous news for the Fen Edge Community Association.

Tesco has teamed up with Groundwork to launch the Bags of Help initiative which offers community groups and projects, in each of around 200 Tesco regions across the UK, a share of revenue generated from the 5p charge levied on single-use carrier bags.

The Fen Edge Festival 2017 now goes forward to a customer vote in Tesco stores where customers will decide the outcome by voting for their favourite project each time they shop. Voting will take place from Wednesday 1st March to Saturday 29th April. The result of the voting will be known by the end of May. The project with the highest number of votes across our region will receive £5,000, the second placed project £2,000 and the third placed project £1,000.

The Fen Edge Festival
This year’s Festival will take place in Cottenham from 23 to 25 June and is a great opportunity for residents in the five Fen Edge Villages (Cottenham, Landbeach, Rampton, Willingham and Waterbeach) to come together at a community festival of music, dance, sports, food, play, arts and crafts and fun.

Fen Edge Festival 2017 Cottenham Village Green CambridgeshireThis popular and well-attended event has taken place every two years since 2005. Over 3,000 people attended the 2015 Festival as the five Fen Edge villages demonstrated their vibrant community spirit, with individuals and families enjoying the activities and entertainment and socialising with neighbours and friends, enhancing the sense of community.

The Festival is organised by Fen Edge Community Association (FECA) and supported by a large volunteer team who help running events and stewarding. FECA is a registered charity which works to benefit the community by improving the educational, social, recreational and leisure facilities in the Fen Edge villages. The 45 member organisations of FECA have over 2,500 individual members. The Festival provides these clubs, groups and societies with a unique opportunity to raise money in the context of a large event and to attract new members.

The member organisations of FECA are instrumental in:
– enhancing the sense of community;
– increasing opportunities for residents of Fen Edge villages to participate in village life; and
– providing an opportunity to celebrate our community, its diversity and its cohesion.

In the last year twelve months member groups of the Fen Edge Community Association have delivered a number of physical improvements to outdoor spaces including the development of the Willingham QEII Playing Field Playground, Landbeach Tithe Barn restoration and the planting of 1,250 hawthorn and blackthorn hedging plants on WARG field by Cottenham Parish Council as part of National Tree Week in November 2016.
