to the Fen Edge Community Association On-line - SPRING/SUMMER 2010
The Chairman's Report
Whilst we have been relatively lucky in avoiding the high levels of snow during this winter we have had what might be called a “good winter” which hopefully would have despatched all the nasty bugs etc. Talking of which the much feared Swine Flu did not materialise into an epidemic as had been feared. Thank goodness for that.
With memories of endless frosts at night it might seem a little premature to be thinking of outdoor swimming, it is with a good deal of regret to learn that the lido at Cottenham Village College has reached the end of its life. Time has taken its toll on the pool, the estimates for correcting the problems with this leave the committee with little choice but to close it. Talks are ongoing about the feasibility of building a replacement indoor swimming pool but these are at a very early stage at the moment. Given the ongoing economic climate funding for such a project would be diffi cult and prolonged, so a short term solution for swimmers in the village is alas a visit to Impington or beyond.
Whilst funding generally is certainly difficult it is gratifying to record the success of Cottenham Community Centre with its successful bid of attaining £50,000 towards the conversion of the former Methodist Church in Cottenham to a planned centre for all of inhabitants of Cottenham. Our association granted them some seed funding at the very beginning of this project and it is reassuring for this project to have gained the support of so many living within the patch area.
One of the benefits of membership of our association is grant aid to both fledgling and established clubs and societies within our area. Other benefi ts include reduced room hire charges at Cottenham Village College, use of their mini buses subject to approved drivers and a small mileage charge. Not least of all free advertising in this publication. We reach out to over 6000 households in the patch area together with placements in local libraries, gyms etc.
We seek to benefit the communities of Waterbeach, Rampton, Willingham, Landbeach and Cottenham to improve the social, leisure and recreational facilities for all.
My continuing thanks to all of the volunteers within our patch for their splendid support,
without them so many things would simply not happen.
Finally we are holding our Annual General Meeting on the 19th April at Cottenham Village
College, this starts at 7.30pm and will give you a chance to meet with the committee and
share ideas for the coming year. I also know that we a looking for a couple of new faces
on our committee and hope that you might be one of them.
