Cottenham Fun Run helps Cottenham Primary School Learning Resource Centre

The Cottenham Fun Run, held in May, raised £700 and today the proceeds were presented by the Fen Edge Community Association to Cottenham Primary School.  At school assembly Mr James Kilsby, Headteacher, announced that the money would be used to buy new books and materials for the school’s Learning Resource Centre.

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) opened a year ago and was designed with input from a group of ‘Year 6 Librarians’. The pupils requested that the Centre should have an internet cafe feel and it   features a row of i-desk integrated computers and desks for student use. They also asked for bespoke bookshelf furniture, lots of light and plenty of colours on the floor.

The LRC is the school’s lending library and is also used by classes for guided reading sessions with their teachers. Pupils can visit the Centre during the lunchtime break and it is also the location for a Reading for Pleasure club.

On Thursday afternoons, the after school LRC Drop-In provides an opportunity for parents and children to visit the Learning Resource Centre to change books, read and generally access resources.

Fen Edge Community Association presentation to Cottenham Primary SchoolMr Kilsby said that the £700 grant would have a direct impact on increasing the stock of books held by the Learning Resource Centre. The Centre is managed by Mrs Debbie Lingley supported by Mrs Davina Garner, Mrs Rebecca Struthers and the Year 6 Junior Librarians.

Cottenham Primary School is justifiably proud of their Learning Resource Centre and the part it is playing in helping the school to achieve above national average scores in reading ability and progress.
